CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Night Train to Timisoara

December 1989

THE SECOND-CLASS COMPARTMENT was nearly full, mostly with workers traveling to nearby factories for the night shift. He had chosen a second-class ticket in the hope of blending in, but now realized that had been a mistake. His American clothes immediately set him apart from the worn overcoats and dirty uniforms around him.

He sat in the back seat next to the window and tried to make himself small. The men were quiet, absorbed in their own lives. Whatever talking was done occurred in whispers, as were all conversations in Romania. From early childhood the people knew to express themselves in vague allusions, a raising of the eyebrows, the flick of a finger. No names were ever mentioned. “How is the guy you told me about?” “What happened to that friend of yours?” “How did that matter resolve?” And so on.

The trip to Timisoara was scheduled to take ten hours, long enough for a good nap. The regular tick-tock, tick-tock of the iron wheels quickly brought on the desired drowsiness and he melted into the warmth of oblivion.
